After catching up on some much needed post-TCAF rest (full festival write-up coming soon. Spoiler: It was AMAZING) I was delighted to find a really great review of Silly Kingdom written by Matthew Szewczyk of “First Comics News.”In it he compares SK to the first issue of Bone (a high compliment as Bone is one of my all time favourite comics) and writes:“This is a book that you will want to buy for that young reader in your family to introduce them to the joys that can be found within the covers of a well done comic book. I have a feeling that once they are done with Silly Kingdom that they will be a comic book fan for life.”The rest of the review can be found here. Kind thanks to Mr. Szewczyk for a very lovely write up :)

Now that Shaggy and I are finished our latest comic (for a certain awesome anthology) I think it’s high time we share some sneak peeks of “Radio Adrift.” Here are some concept doodles of our main character Wiya and a couple finished panels (internet high-five points if you can spot the cameos).

We’ll be able to talk more about this project when we get the go-ahead from our editor, from what we’ve seen, this anthology is going to be absolutely gorgeous

I’ve come up with a new plan to get Una the Blade out into the universe. I’m going to collaborate on short stand-alone stories with some of my most talented artist pals. The plan is that each 20-page digital issue will contain a short story drawn by a friend and the rest of the issue will be drawn by me. So far the roster includes:
Simon Roy
Rebecca Dart
Thomas N. Perkins IV
Katie Shanahan
and a few other possibles yet to be announced.

Sweeeeet!

Michael May (writer for Robot 6 and other comic websites) wrote up a good review of the “Cautionary Fables and Fairytales” comic anthology my brother Shaggy and I are apart of, and had some super nice things to say about our story “Tatterhood.” Here’s an excerpt from the review which can be read over on the School Library Journal website. :F

Oct 8 last year marked the date my brother Shaggy and I released our first self published comic Silly Kingdom, a project made possible by the generous donations and encouraging enthusiasm from our friends, family and readers from around the world.

It’s been an amazing year taking Silly Kingdom all across North America on convention tours. We met wonderful people and made new friends along the way, received the honor of being nominated for two 2012 Joe Shuster Awards, and were left with an itch to get back to making more comics!

While we wrap up the last of our IndieGogo donor rewards, and start planning more Silly Kingdom stories, we also wanted to mark the 1 year anniversary by making the comic more accessible to folk who haven’t read it yet.

From now on the digital PDF version of the comic is $0.99 and the print version has been dropped to $6.00 (there are only 51 printed comics left and we won’t be printing more until the 2nd comic is ready for publication after the winter). Both print and PDF versions can be found in our online shop (and if you’re interested in getting a print copy be sure to let us know if you’d like us to personalize it to you!)

Thanks so much for your amazing support of our projects (and for following me on tumblr)! Hope you have a superb weekend :D

TCAF and Joe Shuster Award nominations!

(Pushing comics on our lovely cartoonist friend Tory Woollcott.)

My brother Shaggy and I had an absolutely fantastic time at TCAF (Toronto Comic Arts Festival) last weekend- definitely one of the most fun, successful and inspiring conventions we’ve exhibited at yet! And I’d like to give HUGE THANKS to our little sister Hesbell and friend Adriana Blake for being amazing booth buddies.

We are also super excited to announce that Silly Kingdom is up for TWO nominations in the 2012 Joe Shuster Awards!!! We’ve been nominated for the Gene Day award for self publishing and the Dragon Award for Kids Comics (and are the only self published title in that category). We’re absolutely honored to be up for consideration amongst so many amazing titles, thank you!!

We were also lucky enough to get a couple sweet fanarts while at TCAF, one depicting sibling shenanigans from our cartoonist pal Brian Evinou:

And another from the delightful Jamie Campbell:

Mega thanks to everyone who came by TCAF and the after parties to say hello, hang out and pick up copies of our book. TCAF wouldn’t have been nearly as much fun without you guys and Shaggy and I are ever grateful for your awesome support (and all around awesomeness).

Cheers!
