unatheblade:

The latest in a series of appreciation posts for the artists who have graciously agreed to appear in Una the Blade. Today it’s Katie Shanahan. Katie is an animator and storyboard artist from Toronto, Ontario. She and her brother have self-published the comic Silly Kingdom and appeared in numerous comic book anthologies, including Flight volumes 7 and 8.

Thanks Steve! Looking forward to working together on the Una anthology :)

A commission for AksSarah of her lovely lion fish mermaid OC!

Rough commission sketches for Daryl who requested Ripley, Jones and the Xenomorph. Ripley is one of my favourite film characters, I’m surprised I’ve never drawn her before!

Work break doodle! Wearing a Yuki-7 shirt I bought at ComicCon two years ago. Drawn with: Sketch Book Pro
I don’t draw these too often, mostly because every day in deadline-mode tends to look something like this:

Amethyst of Gemworld. The cartoon reboot looks adorable and I’ve been enamored with Brianne Drouhard’s lovely art for a looong time.

Quick work-break doodle done with Sketchbook Pro’s copic marker settings.

Morning warm-up doodle. Daily outfit.

Morning warm-up doodle. Daily outfit.

Work break doodle. The show I’m storyboarding on at the moment has us using sketchbook pro and there’s a lovely copic marker setting I’m having fun playing with.
Daily outfit: I picked up a cute head band from Urban Outfitters that has bendable wire in the bow for easy positioning… into rabbit ears! :O :B

“The scariest moment is just before you start. After that it can only get better./All we have is THIS moment./Practice, Practice, Draw, Draw./You can feel sorry for yourself… or you can do it!/Action is the only possible key to success./Time is never right. Conditions are never perfect. Just do it!/A day without laughter is a day wasted./Success is buried on the other side of frustration./Nothing has to take years unless you want it to.”

Katie is an awesome Canadian cartoonist who I’ve had the pleasure of meeting twice at the past two TCAFs. Her art is always expressive, dynamic, and fun. Just bursting with energy! From her auto-bio comic, Shrub Monkeys, to the other strips and one-offs she’s done, as well as her illustrations and the amazing Silly Kingdom series that she started with her brother Shaggy, she is a drawing machine. MACHINE! If that’s not motivating in itself, I don’t know what is…
So, how do you use all this advice? Pick a project, situation, or challenge and apply them! Think creatively! Do it!

Forgot to retumble this! Commissioned by Mike Horowitz who asked cartoonists to draw themselves giving some of their favourite motivational quotes and life advice.  Check out the rest of them here!
